“People feel like content creators are jobless people that are running away from “actual jobs”. It’s like they think we are doing some type of “easy job” and just chilling but, it does take a lot of work behind the scenes” Omowunmi speaks on the misconceptions towards content creators, how she overcomes her creative fears, some of her high moments as a creator and spilling the tea
Hi Wunmi, can you introduce yourself?
My name is Idowu Omowunmi, mostly known as Mimie Jay. I am a Content Creator, Lifestyle and Beauty Blogger, and a YouTuber.
When did you know you wanted to become a YouTuber?
I started YouTube majorly for makeup, I wanted to start making longer videos for it because Instagram didn’t have the long video duration feature back then, also, I was working on a makeup book at the time, so I felt like having a YouTube channel would boost it. However, I had started blogging before then, having a YouTube channel almost felt like the next step and it truly went in sync with my plans. It was around May last year or thereabout. After a while, I decided I could do more lifestyle videos on my channel as well. The plan wasn’t exactly to be a full-time YouTuber, because at the time I wasn’t thinking that way, I thought I was just going to get a job after school, go into career probably have a business by the side but not fully content creation like I am doing now.
Did you ever have any fears while you were starting? How did you overcome any of it?
Yes, I did have fears. I had fears surrounding the idea that you know its YouTube; it’s not all that easy to get subscribers, views, likes, and the rest of it. But, I was just ready to put in the work. I wasn’t putting unnecessary pressure on myself; I would say that was how I overcame those fears. I was willing to be consistent with my content.
For someone starting as a YouTuber, what are the necessary things you think he/she should consider?
Oh well, you need to know that YouTube is a lot of work, you need to have the time or create the time. Also, consistency is key. A lack of it could make you lose interest very quickly or more so get discouraged because if you are not consistent, it would tell on your channel and when you are not seeing desired results, chances are high that you would get discouraged. Secondly, be ready to “Invest” so to speak; be ready to save up for necessary gadgets to make the quality of your videos good. The truth is even though there are people who say “You don’t need to have the equipment, you don’t need this or that” At least, have a good phone that can record good quality videos, people now pay attention and watch YouTube videos like they do Netflix and they want the best possible quality they can get, so yea, you need the right gadgets. Thirdly, do not have unrealistic expectations, anything can happen, it could be easy for someone to grow their channel faster compared to the next person but you need to stay focus and not put pressure unnecessarily on yourself. Just do what you got to do.
What has been the highest moment for you as a YouTuber?
I would say I have had two high moments. One was when I hit 1000 subscribers and the second one was when I got monetized.
What are the misconceptions you’ve heard about content creators?
Some people feel like content creators are jobless people that are running away from “actual jobs” These people do not know how much work it takes into creating content, it’s like they think we are doing some type of “easy job” and just chilling but, it does take a lot of work behind the scenes because you see the entertaining parts of contents doesn’t mean it was an easy job creating it.
Who are your top 3 YouTube creators currently?
Dimma Umeh, she is my number one. Number two would be Erin on demand, three is Cathrin Manning.
A gun to your head, what song would you sing correctly to live?
Yeparipa! Oh yea, I know my brother’s song *laughs hard. Mon Cheri by Yhemolee
If not a makeup and lifestyle influencer, what would you do instead?
I would probably be working at a bank, making use of my Bsc degree in Agric Economics.
I hope you enjoyed this as much as we did having this conversation
