Photography to me is a divine art; the storyteller in me sees photography in different perspectives that just feels aesthetical (I really wanted to use this word smh) soothing to me. Deolu’s photography is one dynamite work of art that catches my attention every time. I decided to slide in his DM for a feature, and I guess here we are.
Hi, Deolu can you introduce yourself?
My name is Deolu, people also know me as ‘Deolu Photograpy’. I am 24 years old, a nature photographer and I also do portraits and events
You did a portfolio thread on Twitter sometimes last year; I noticed nature photography is one of the major aspects of your works. What’s the idea behind it?
I didn’t tap into my niche for photography until 2018. Initially, I started off doing events, portraits actually every aspect of photography but nature photography; I realized I wasn’t exactly good in these different parts of photography until I started taking nature photos. By the way, my love for nature photos started while I was on a vacation trip to South Africa, Cape Town to be specific (beautiful place), I started to take pictures of random things on my phone, the pictures came out really nice, so I decided to explore nature photography, which I extremely love now, it’s amazing
Deolu, I guess it’s safe to call you a celebrity photographer, I mean you’ve taken pictures of several celebrities. How did you land your first gig?
Okay, how I landed my first gig with a celebrity in 2019, was through a business deal with a UK fashion store that was trying to expand their market to Nigeria, I was their official photographer in Nigeria. Lolu from Big Brother was their brand ambassador which made him my first celebrity client. I have since then worked with many celebrities, influencers, and the likes; I have also worked for D&G that’s Denola Grey.
What initiated your love for photography?
My love for photography started as far back as 2014, and it’s a funny story. Instagram was the new thing at the time and I was really interested in the happenings of the app, I mean if you weren’t on it at the time you don’t know what’s up. I would randomly just explore the app, one day, I stumbled on the page of this white photographer (I can’t remember his name now) and I was amazed by his work, I followed him and also started my search for other photographers. Gradually my love for photography grew, that I got an application on my laptop called Picasso; so I would take pictures of my friends with my phone and edit them on this app. So yea, that’s how I started till I became a professional. Funny enough I don’t like Instagram again.
It’s good that you mentioned this; I was going to ask why your engagement on Instagram is relatively low compared to Twitter
Yes, I use Twitter a lot because it sells my market. I have realized that on Instagram, you are limited to the number of people that your work reaches except in the cases of sponsorship ads. So, I did my research, a retweet from Twitter can expose your work to thousands of people, and that’s just from one retweet, now imagine a thousand retweets, that’s a crazy amount of engagement already. Besides that, I have made more clients off Twitter, so twitter really is my best bet for my work.
What is the weirdest thing a client has said to you or asked you to do?
To be honest, I get loads of weird messages, but the weirdest, I wouldn’t even call it weird I would say annoying is when someone sends the work of another photographer to me and says they want the picture I intend to take of them to look like that. In my head it’s like, “I don’t mean to be rude but if you want your pictures to look like that, why don’t you book that photographer instead” To me, I feel like it’s an insult to my craft and you don’t rate me if you’re booking me it’s because you know I can deliver and not replicate someone else’s work
Is there any advice you wish you had gotten while starting as a creative?
If there is any advice I wish I had gotten, it would be the Business of Photography. When I started, I didn’t monetize my photography, so even when I decided to start making money off my work it became difficult, so yea I had to learn the hard way
How do you stay creatively inspired?
For me, inspiration is everywhere. I get inspired by anything and everything. I try to keep an open mind and not be ignorant of my surroundings. So, yea I pay attention to the littlest things
One talent you wish you have?
I have honestly been waiting on someone to ask me this question, I wish I could make music, either singing or producing music. I am a big fan of it, so if God is still sharing talent he should please consider me.
If not photography, what would you do instead?
If not photography then it would definitely be Business, trade basically. I have really not seen myself as the corporate 9-5 guy, so maybe I could look into Agriculture; actually, I’m even thinking about it, you know to diversify.
Tell me something (juicy) most people don’t know about you?
That I am a boring person, if not for photography nobody would know me and weirdly enough I am also a funny guy and also shy.
I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed speaking with Deolu. Follow him on Twitter (his favorite social media) @deoluphotograph and also check out his other works
